Travel Protection

Why purchase travel insurance?

Even with the most meticulous planning, travel can be full of surprises. Here are just a few situations that could arise, forcing you to forfeit your funds if you are not protected.

  • You get sick just before traveling or while on tour.
  • A positive COVID 19 test before or upon arrival.
  • A family emergency comes up the day before you're due to depart.
  • A severe storm causes your flight to be grounded, and now you'll miss part of your itinerary.
  • Your bags get lost, misrouted or damaged in transit.
  • You get food poisoning or sprain an ankle while on tour.

When you purchase a travel insurance plan, you can enjoy your trip knowing that you have protection against many unforeseen circumstances.

Why Choose Travel Protection by Travelex?

For your convenience, we offer a travel insurance plan provided by Travelex Insurance Services, one of the most respected names in the industry, which you can add to your booking. The plan is available to anybody with a primary residence in the United States, excluding overseas territories. Travelex is one of the few travel insurance providers offering coverage in Cuba. We offer competitive, wholesale rates.

Benefits include coverage for trip cancellation for a covered reason, interruption or travel delays, missed connections, medical emergency expenses and evacuation, lost or delayed baggage, and more. Maximum covered trip cost is $15,000 per person.

Most US airline carriers are required to provide each passenger with a basic Cuban medical insurance plan. This insurance is mandatory in Cuba and offers basic medical assistance, extension of stay at state designated facilities for quarantine, up to 30 days. This policy is only valid in Cuba and does not cover trip interruption and cancelation.

COVID-19 Coverage & FAQs

What coverage is provided in regards to coronavirus?

The plan provides emergency medical & evacuation coverage if you become ill with COVID-19 or are quarantined while traveling, and you may be eligible for trip interruption and emergency medical/evacuation coverage. COVID-19 is being treated the same as any other illness, and it is subject to pre-existing medical condition exclusions. Please see the policy for details.

Like most travel insurance policies, this plan does not provide coverage for trips that are cancelled due to travel advisories, the destination being inaccessible, or fear of getting ill.

Would I be covered if I cancel my trip due to coronavirus?

To be eligible for trip cancellation/interruption coverage, one of the following must occur while your coverage is in effect:

  • You or your traveling companion would need to be sick as diagnosed by a physician and unfit for travel (which could include contracting the coronavirus and being physically quarantined as a result).
  • Your non-traveling family member is diagnosed with COVID-19, and it is considered life-threatening or they require your immediate care. This must be certified by a physician.
  • Your business partner is diagnosed with COVID-19 and you must cancel or interrupt your trip to assume daily management of the business. This must be certified by a physician.
Would I be covered if my physician advises me not to travel due to the risk of contracting the coronavirus?

Fear of contracting the coronavirus, including due to your age or underlying health conditions, even with a certified physician notice, is not an eligible reason for trip cancellation/interruption coverage. You would only be eligible for this coverage if you become ill while the policy is in place and the sickness is so disabling as to prevent you from taking or continuing the trip.

Would I be covered for trip cancellation or trip interruption due to travel advisories or travel bans?

If you are unable to travel to your destination due to a government travel warning, restriction or ban, you would not be eligible for trip cancellation/interruption coverage. Travelex may allow you to apply the policy to another trip at a later date. Please contact Travelex or insightCuba for further details on this option.

Would I have to be quarantined in a hospital to be eligible for coverage?

You would be eligible for trip interruption/delay coverage if you are quarantined in either a hospital, hotel, or vacation rental (i.e. Airbnb) while on a trip on a doctor's orders. This order must be submitted with your claim. You would not be eligible for coverage for the following:

  • Government-imposed quarantine
  • Self-imposed quarantine
  • Shelter-in-place order
